Dear Friends,
Welcome to the Working Artist newsletter!
We built Working Artist because we remember growing up and reading interviews with our favorite artists in magazines, being in awe of their work, and wondering how—in an expensive and difficult world—we too might be able to build artistic practice into our lives as adults. As we began navigating our careers, health insurance coverage (or lack thereof), housing affordability, and so much more, we realized that the only way to build this type of resource is by doing it ourselves.
Working Artist celebrates the urge to create in a world where creation is not viewed as “practical.” We are an of-the-culture magazine featuring artists whose work and practice we’re excited about, as well as an honest and comprehensive resource by and for the community.
Working Artist is a joint venture founded in 2024 by Elizabeth Meyer, writer and financial communications strategist, with co-editor Kate Meadows, Brooklyn-based poet and author of the Substack desire lines.
What you can expect in your inbox regularly:
Honest interviews: wisdom about the work that goes into supporting a practice from writers, artists, musicians, filmmakers, and more.
Money diaries: a glimpse into the financial realities of working creatives.
Resources: expert-vetted guides on how to navigate healthcare, build financial literacy, and find community as a creative person.
Multi-media contributions: the work of our community on display.
Ultimately, we are building Working Artist because we want to share the stories of how and why we continue to create. We hope that by building Working Artist, we’ll give our readers the tools to advocate for themselves as they continue bringing art into this world—and a community where they, in turn, can share their work and experiences.
We are thrilled to have you follow along on a project we’re so passionate about. Thanks for joining us.
XO,
Working Artist
I think this one might be right up your alley... "Mom, who had just endured surgeries on both of her arms, refused to sit still. She taped paint brushes to each of her FEET — and was literally painting classics from the throes of her toes." https://thegoldenmean2040.substack.com/p/my-mother-the-author
